The main objective of Peretas Berkumpul is to create an inclusive, safe, comfortable, and brave space for learning and sharing for all involved; participants of different backgrounds and the living environment that supports our activities.
We encourage everyone involved to approach this event with openness and a positive attitude, to participate constructively throughout the event and toward one another.
Therefore, Peretas Berkumpul is committed and dedicated to provide an open, harassment-free environment for all and for the universe that enables our breathing. To ensure so, we apply a Zero Tolerance policy on any coercion, harassment, and violence in any form during Peretas Berkumpul. We will take resolute action against all violations.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Our learning and sharing process are founded on the belief that everyone is equal. In both formal and informal interpersonal interaction, in or out of class throughout the event, everyone is equal: everyone treats and is treated equally by each other. Every available knowledge, skill, and experience is important and must be valued to the same degree. Nonetheless, the differences of roles, policy-making authority, and related rights and responsibilities are among the differences to be acknowledged by all.
- The process of learning and sharing are not limited to human-to-human relationships; what we take from nature we must return as well as possible. Let us manage our waste wisely; dispose trash properly into the bins provided.
- Effective learning and sharing occur when interactions are built upon mutual respect. We believe that the many differences across the room shall not be homogenized. Let us respect differences and diversity by refraining from remarks that may cause discomfort.
- Exchange opinions first, argue later. As activists, we are naturally critical. However, remember that there will be a lot of different knowledge, political views and ideologies, perspectives, and opinions in this learning and sharing space. We encourage discussion and debate, but above all, a common ground without erasing difference. Discuss and debate the idea, not the person.
- Inclusion and Step Up, Step Back. As activists, we are trained to always express opinions, ,but we must realize that there are often people around us who are more quiet and introverted. Always remember to include everyone in the discussion. The principle is to encourage ourselves to participate (step up) if we are naturally quiet and introverted and to give others the opportunity to talk (step back) if we are naturally vocal.
- Ask early and as often as needed. Participants can freely ask anything and anytime during the training. This training aims to better our understanding and skills. Therefore, let us fulfill the goal together.
- Do not assume gender identity, sexual orientation, economic status, survivor status, social and political background, and health status, etc. Directly ask the person concerned in a polite and respectful way only if such information is relevant to the process. However, keep in mind that everyone reserves the right to non-disclosure of information related to their identity if deemed irrelevant. The Ethics Committee is accountably authorized to learn about participants’ identity if deemed relevant and necessary. A mechanism and procedure is put in place for the Ethics Committee to determine such relevance.
- Everyone MUST protect the privacy and security of all involved. Considering the nature and character of the event and Indonesia’s hostility toward gender and sexual minority groups, everyone is obliged to protect the privacy and security of the event and all involved by not sharing information on the event’s location, time, content, and participants either through verbal communication (telephone), text (social network), and social media. Ask permission from everyone concerned before taking photographs, videos, and audio recording.
- Reprimand politely. We all make mistakes. Provided that they are not critical, driven by unawareness, and not of bad intent, it is our obligation to give a reprimand and correct understanding for the person. Example: Insensitive language or terminology.
UNACCEPTABLE behaviour:
- Verbal and/or nonverbal cues (gesture) stating and/or suggesting insult, harassment, and perpetuating oppression related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, bodily characteristic (ability and disability), physical appearance including facial feature, body shape and size, race, ethnicity, religion, or age;
- Mimicking or making fun of accents with the intention to insult/harass and to perpetuate superiority and inferiority of particular groups; (Note: it is acceptable to ask clarifying questions for words you do not understand because of the speaker’s accent)
- Prohibiting and/or restricting expressions;
- Pressuring, asserting, and/or posing verbal threats;
- Intimidation;
