Peretas Berkumpul is a space of coming together for women art and cultural workers with a diversity of ideas and expressions to critically discuss their knowledge and practice.
The open call invited anyone who identifies as a woman, Indonesian citizen over the age of 18 (in February 2019), creator (writer, thespian, artist, dancer, musician, voice artist, pottery artist, textile artist, culinarian), intellectual, curator, critic, or practitioner of other activities that enrich and advance women’s cultural expressions.
Women art workers with limited access to resources due to various reasons (suffering from discrimination of gender expression, disability, motherhood status, or others) are encouraged to apply.
Peretas Berkumpul 01 took place in Poso, home to the guardians of “Pakaroso!” — a call to strengthen one another in the Pamona language. An expression with a long-standing history of mutual strengthening in Tana Poso (literal translation: the Poso Land), the Pakaroso spirit was revived by the activist-protectors of Lake Poso, as the government appropriated the word Maroso, meaning “strong” (while not necessarily representing the spirit of mutual strengthening). Pakaroso is a motto chosen to brave Maroso, a counternarrative that underlines the inadequacy of strength without mutual strengthening, a spirit only the grassroots carry.
In collaboration with Institut Mosintuwu a notable grassroots women’s movement for peace and justice through culture, Peretas Berkumpul 01: Pakaroso! invites women to revisit the narratives born from women’s experiences and establish strategies for arts and cultural works within a cross-border women’s network, one that collectively strengthens the works of women.
